10 Ways to Have A Stylish Home
by Heima’s Creative Director, Rossy Anne D. Yabut
Interested in an exciting adventure this weekend? Why not redecorate and redesign your home — it’s easy, fun, challenging and relatively inexpensive.
Let’s count the ways:
1
FIND INSPIRATION. It’s the first thing a homeowner has to have before setting out a personal project. When you do not feel relaxed in your own home, or you get bored and stressed — then it is high time to make a change. Redecorate! One’s home is supposed to enliven the spirit, induce inspiration and re-energize, not the other way around. The idea of creating a comfortable, cozy space that you would always want to go home to is inspiring in itself.
2
DECIDE WHICH AREA TO DESIGN FIRST. Our homes have a lot of areas and spaces allotted for varied functions. Decide which area to design first, and work your way throughout the entire space. Create a reading nook, re-angle your bed or just plainly clean and declutter.
3
SET A TIMETABLE. It will keep you pressured but stimulated. You can transform the look of a space in as little as one day. A long weekend is a great idea to do this on your own. Trust your creative instincts and create an inspiring change for your own space. Anyone can do it!
4
NO BUDGET? NO PROBLEM. Inspiration is everywhere! Money should not be an excuse to have a well-designed home. Rearranging furniture, re-angling areas and cleaning out a space cost nothing but effort and enthusiasm. You can repaint a wall in an interesting color. Choose to accessorize; home decors and accessories are everywhere. Check out department stores, thrift shops and design plazas like LRI. Also, if you have a lamp, turn it on. Good lighting sets the mood, and it’s always interesting if we have other light turned on inside our homes aside from the staple white light.

The problem (or maybe it’s a good thing) with novels like Before Ever After is that they make you feel your life is boring no matter how good it really is. So what if you have a high paying job and you’re doing what you love? Heck, you can be the inventor of Facebook and as rich as the guy, but even if you get 2 billion likes you’re not going to have three weeks of excitement as the main characters of Before Ever After.
You wake up one morning and you find your husband has a a grandson as old as you are?And your guy has been dead for three years? Yeah, crazy doesn’t even begin to describe how messed up that is. Now that’s a story I’d shell out money for. But seriously if you’re looking for a quality Filipino novel, you should really try out Before Ever After. As I said the the book has a great story (don’t worry no more spoilers) with magic realism as the main literary device which is why crazy was within the neighborhood.
But it’s not just the fantastical theme that were great about the book. The characters were easy to sympathize with and their quirks and backstories were delightful (you’ll never look at chickens the same way again). The description of the travels were amazing especially as the setting shifted to Europe, and the Filipino perspective is a much welcome given that we usually read about the Old World as seen by Western authors. Overall, it was rookie author Samantha Sotto showed that she made a good decision to be a full time novelist, and that it was appropriate to have chosen magic realism for her debut since she can cast spells with her words with the best of them.
As it’s title say, Before Ever After shows that.
